Instead of Earning Your M.B.A….

If you’re among the unfortunates to get laid off or find that your career stalled, it may be a good time to go back to school.  According to ComputerWorld, IBM last year helped create a service management degree program at Missouri State University, and claims it’s the first bachelor of science degree in IT service within the U.S. Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Computer Science also has begun offering a Master of Science in Information Technology in IT Service Management (MSIT-ITSM).

There’s been a lot of discussion about a better alignment between IT and business, so these programs are meant to help IT workers become more well-rounded in those areas. For instance, Carnegie Mellon’s ITSM program, which is taking admissions until early December, is designed for professionals who want to manage organizations, their people, processes, information and technology as services for customers.

Since it is a master’s program, Carnegie Mellon requires students to have an undergraduate degree in an engineering discipline, computer science, software engineering or informatiion systems. The curriculum itself focuses on four core areas,  including IT computing/software engineering, behavioral management sciences, quantitative methods and IT service management. If you want more information on Carnegie Mellon’s program, just go to www.servicemanagement.cs.cmu.edu.
